It's amazing to come to the conclusion that about 10% of the Dj's that i have encountered really know what the fu.. they were doing. Werkn' the highs, cuttn' out the lows..... After designing all of my sound systems for clubs or mobile jocks i teach the basics of a 0db system and how to work it correctly. Dammmmn! You should see the eyes pop up and the voices lost in the mix. STAY OUT OF THE RED DUDE!
Im' going to let this rest until an intelligent response comes this way. get with the program man. You should be held responsible for the drivers you blow. Yes you 90% of 0.
So how was your day?

Re: How many DJ's do you Know that really know the technical side of rockn' a sound system?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 11:57 AMI'm new to the trade...about 2 years, but come from a studio and live sound background. The DJ thing is a whole new game and I'm really trying to learn more about live tweeking...It's way more than people realize. There is so much you can do. I am thinking that I should go study under someone to get my questions answered. -

Tue, May 10, 2005 - 7:10 AMOpen mind, no insecurities, very good. You are on your way. Get with the best sound on sound mixer and absorb his talent. If it sounds excellent most of the time, not too loud, no distortion that DJ is your vehicle. Going to retail stores like the Guitar Center and checking out the newest equipment helps you also.
Good luck,

Re: How many DJ's do you Know that really know the technical side of rockn' a sound system?
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 8:43 PMI learned as a kid by taking apart shit and trying to find out hat made it work.
Eventually becoming a DJ and purhasing equipment the questions i asked the salemen where the right ones and the salemen knew their shit. Building a home system, then mobile system and eventually knowing enough to tweek athe clubs sytems that DJ recked my knowledge grew. I started to sell for the same companies the salesmen that helped me and outsold them. I began to spin for giant clubs (10-20 thousand watt systems) and met Richard Long the king of the 70s-80s nightclubs and sound designer. He was responsible for clubs like The Underground, Red Parrot, The Garage, The Clubhouse, O'Dells and 54 other clubs around the world. He was impressed with my knowledge of his homemade crossover and use of the Thompson vocal eliminator. I got my respect and cinfidence from that point. Now studio, club, church and mobile systems are my main clients.

Re: How many DJ's do you Know that really know the technical side of rockn' a sound system?
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 10:08 PMi can't call myself a pro soundman, but it's amazing how many djs need to be trimmed at the main board.
djs--if the sound is fuzzy, check your LEVELS first, then your stylus. if it's not those THEN find the soundman.
and can we get a DOWN knob for us djs who aren't wanna-be-rock-guitarists? i HATE loud monitors--i want to be able to hear in 20 years...
my day's alright. :) -

Re: How many DJ's do you Know that really know the technical side of rockn' a sound system?
Tue, May 10, 2005 - 7:15 AMLoud is never good! You are on the money about the trim. Thats exactly what it is supposed to do, trim the gain. 0db is your output from your mixer all of the time. Fader at 7, master at 7, trim or gain from 3-7 depending on the mixer output. EQ's set at 0db at max input and output. com, pressors, and crossovers at 0db. Amps should run full and the outut levels should be controlled by the crossover.

Re: How many DJ's do you Know that really know the technical side of rockn' a sound system?
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 8:51 PMIf a sound system is built on the 0db formula there shoul never be any problems other than what the DJ creates. Amplifiers should have 20% more wattage than the speakers need for max output. EQs must be set at 0db and should be 2/3rds octive with curves slightly above and below the 0db curve. Signal processors, compressors and crossovers should maintain the 0db output, therefore NO Gain in the system. Amps should be wide open and levels will be controlled by the master mixer. Output level of mixer shoul never exceed 7-7 and individual sliders at 7 and can go to 10 if you need more headroom.
